Doodle Jump

“BE WARNED: Insanely Addictive”, yeah right. I saw all the buzz surrounding this game, but wouldn’t even part with 99 cents to give it a try, it just looked too lame. A Christmas special came around and I got it for free, fired it up for 2 minutes and I was done, trashed it.

A month later, a friend and I were brainstorming games for the iPhone and were looking at the top 10 lists and Doodle Jump kept appearing, Top 10 Game, Top 10 Grossing Game, Top 10 Grossing App, WHAT?!?! Top 10 Grossing App and at $.99, there had to be more to it. So we both start playing, mocking it, and suddenly we grew quiet. The quiet is the addiction kicking in… and I’m a junky.

What seems like a stupid game is actually extremely fun, even stressful, as you bounce higher and higher. There is a set number of play variations so it is not too repetitive. There are tools to propel you higher once you get larger scores so the games don’t last too long. There are various skills you need to master – shooting, screen-wrap jumps, platform height judgment, etc – so you are always getting better, higher, then unlocking more play sequences.

The leaderboards are also a fun element. Etchings on the edge of the screen show your friends’ and your own previous records. The higher you jump, the more your adrenaline floods your system. And before you know it, it’s 4:00 am and you have to be up in 3 hours. This is a dangerous game, you’ve been warned.

Available on the App Store
